How long does the installation process take?
Except for heavy rush periods, we will be finished with your computer within one working day.
What are the minimum hardware system requirements?
The minimum system requirements that we support for a wireless installation are Windows XP or 512 MB of RAM memory, a 1GHZ processor, and a CD-ROM drive.
What operating systems are supported by the wireless hardware?
Windows XP (Pro, Home) / Vista (all versions)
Are Apple/Mac computers supported on the wireless network?
Yes. In the event that your Mac does not have a wireless Airport card installed, we can order the device you will need. However, most Macs now come with integrated wireless devices.
Are their any software programs that could alter the wireless card settings?
Yes. If you decide to download or update a program that may change your computer's dialing properties. For example, a new version of AOL and many chat/messenger programs could set your computer's default settings to something other than what is required by your wireless card. Try to avoid downloading these type of preference-changing Internet programs unless you are an experienced user. Some Anti-Virus clients that have Internet Security modules may also impair your ability to browse the internet (i.e. Norton Internet Security). Use caution when setting protection levels with these applications. Feel free to stop by the Tech Shop or the help desk for free Anti-Virus alternatives that will not adversely affect your wireless connectivity.
What kind of Technical Support is offered?
The VSU Tech Shop will provide limited technical support for the computer products needed for the HallNet service. Whether the cards are purchased from the VSU Tech Shop or another vendor source, technical support personnel will install the cards and drivers and ensure that the computer can access the wireless network (for $50 an hour). Customers must bring their laptop computer or their desktop CPU (not the monitor, keyboard, mouse or cables) to the VSU Tech Shop on the ground floor of Langdale Hall for this installation process. Due to time constraints during the first month of each term, it is possible that the customer might have to leave their computer for this service and pick it up the next working day. Once it is determined that the computer can access the network, it is the responsibility of the customer to install the computer in their residence hall. If the computer does not work in the residence hall, the customer should call the campus Help Desk at 229-245-4357 or the VSU Tech Shop at 229-219-1398 for further assistance. Most problems with HallNet can be resolved without bringing the computer back to the VSU Tech Shop.
Is there a charge to reinstall the wireless card/software?
There is no charge for wireless support for 4 years once the initial $50 installation fee is paid.
Which computer system is best compatible with VSU's wireless Internet program (HallNet)?
Clearly the best way to take advantage of the wireless program is with a laptop computer (mobility being the key). HallNet (the wireless network here at VSU) will support practically any new laptop or desktop. The only exception might be some non-standard physical difference in a case affecting the wireless card and/or adapter.
Can we purchase the hardware somewhere else?
Yes you can. However, you need to buy a certified product which meets the standards of the VSU campus network (802.11 b or g).
