TYPES OF RESIDENTIAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES

VSU offers several different kinds of residential learning communities (RLCs) to fit the needs and interests of students living on campus. While most of the current RLCs are for first-year students, a few residential options are available to rising sophomores, juniors and seniors. There are two major distinctions between the types of Residential Learning Communities:

ACADEMIC. These residential learning communities are for students enrolled in a Freshman Year Learning Community (FLC). Academic residential learning communities are linked with a cohort of other first-year students who take a group of academic courses together. The residential component of these learning communities allows students to participate in extracurricular trips and activities related to the theme of the FLC. For more information on Freshman Year Learning Communities, please visit: http://www.valdosta.edu/flcleap/index.shtml

SPECIAL INTEREST. Residential learning communities that are interest-based are not linked with an academic course, or not linked with an academic curriculum. Instead, special interest communities are designed around a specific theme, such as VSU spirit or personal wellness. Similar to academic RLCs, special interest RLCs also feature community events and opportunities inspired by the theme of the RLC.
