Residence Hall Director
The Residence Hall Director is a ten-month, live-in assistantship with the Office of Housing and Residence Life. Reporting to a full-time Complex Director (CD), the Graduate Hall Director provides administrative, supervisory, student personnel, counseling, and conflict resolution services in a residence hall setting. As a live-in member of the residence hall staff, the Graduate Hall Director works with students in developing a comfortable living environment and assisting individuals with their personal needs and concerns. Maintains office hours (15 hours per week) in the hall office.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree is required with extra-curricular activities and student leadership experience. Graduate Assistants must be accepted to the Valdosta State University Graduate School and be enrolled full time. Preference is given to students in the Psychology, Counseling, Education or other applicable programs.
Responsibilities
- Accurately maintains all housing administrative records related to students in assigned hall.
- Oversees, in conjunction with the CD, the overall general upkeep and facility care of the assigned hall within the area, including regular walk-through tours of the residence hall building to effectively monitor the conditions of the facilities.
- Provides direct supervision to up to 8 undergraduate RAs. Ensures daily contact with the RAs of each hall for the purpose of exchanging information, discussion of ideas, problem solving, advising in regards to working with residents and miscellaneous needs.
- Meets weekly with RA staff both in a group and individually with each to facilitate communication and provide support.
- Supervises and monitors the maintenance of accurate records of keys, including room and master keys.
- Selects, trains, and directly supervises front desk staff for assigned hall.
- Oversees front desk operations for assigned residence hall in accordance with Housing and Residence Life front desk procedures.
- With the CD, coordinates the scheduling of fire drills once each semester.
- With the CD, coordinates recruitment, selection, training, and evaluation of RAs.
- Oversees programming and in-service requirements for residence hall staff.
- Serves as the official advisor to the hall council, including attendance at meetings, supervision of activities, and budget management.
- May conduct some in-hall disciplinary meetings with residents.
- Participates and assists with Fall and Spring training workshops.
- Supports and enforces university and housing policies regarding student conduct and works with students and staff to develop a proactive, educational approach to student conduct problems.
- Serves on various committees and task forces.
- Responds and follows up, as appropriate, to emergency/critical incidents related to students in the hall in accordance with Housing and Residence Life emergency procedures.
- Is available during peak weekends such as residence hall opening, closing, homecoming, campus visitation days, and orientation weekends.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Compensation
A stipend of $6000 is paid in ten monthly installments of $600. Tuition and out-of-state fees are waived for graduate assistants. In addition, Graduate Hall Directors are provided with a full meal plan when classes are in session and a furnished apartment, which they are required to reside in. Basic cable, utilities, and local phone service are included.
All Graduate Residence Hall Director positions have been filled for Fall 2009-Spring 2010.
