Disciplinary Ladder
The Office of Housing and Residence Life disciplinary process is a ladder-like figure with seven different stages. Any student that violates a Community Guideline or Student Code of Conduct policy within the residence halls will be held to this model.
Here is a step by step guide to the disciplinary process:
Step 1: RA turns in incident report to Hall Director.
Step 2: Students involved in the incident will meet with the Hall Director of their building, regardless of where the incident occurred. Each individual Hall Director checks on the student’s records, to assess their current “stage.” The stage is determined by looking at the aggregate of the previous violations.
Step 3: The Hall Director will set up a meeting with the student(s) involved. This meeting will occur within one week of the date on the incident report.
The items discussed during the meeting are as follows:
- Review of your rights as a student in the university discipline process.
- Discussion of the incident that occurred.
- Description of the community guidelines and student code of conduct policies which were possibly violated.
- Explanation of the stages of the disciplinary ladder and the possible consequences of policy violations.
Step 4: After a discussion of the incident, the student will be given the opportunity to accept or not accept responsibility for possible policy violations. Depending on the response, disciplinary action may or may not result.
Depending on the policy that was violated (the first number of the policy indicates what stage of the process the violation will start). If there are multiple policies violated the stages are added together to get the beginning stage. For example, a student had been playing football in the hallway and it is after quiet hours. The hall sports policy (1.03--stage 1) and quiet hours policy (2.02--stage 2) would be added together and result in a stage three on the ladder.
- Stage 1: Meet with Hall Director and receive written and verbal warning. Example of violations: appliance (1.01), campaigning/posting (1.02), hall sports (1.03), courtesy hours noise (1.04), visitation (1.05), or decorations (1.06).
- Stage 2: Meet with Hall Director and complete an educational project. Example violation: alcohol (2.01), building access (2.04), quiet hours (2.02), pets (2.07), or overnight visitation (2.03).
- Stage 3: Meet with Hall Director. Sanctions can include fees, community service and/or educational project.
- Stage 4: Meet with Complex Director to discuss contract and housing and university policies.
- Stage 5: Meet with Complex Director to discuss housing contract standing
- Stage 6: Meet with Assistant Director of Residence Life or Assistant Dean of Students for Student Conduct
- Stage 7: Possible Eviction
